Kiwi footballer Niko Kirwan signs first professional deal with Italian third division side

kiwi footballer Niko Kirwan has followed in his famous father's footsteps by signing a professional deal in Italy.

Team Wellington confirmed on Friday that the younger Kirwan, the son of former All Blacks winger and Blues coach Sir John Kirwan, had penned his first professional contract with AC Mestre

The club play Lega Pro, which is the third division of the Italian football system, after earning promotion from the fourth-tier last season.

In more ways than one, the move has a certain symmetry for the 21-year-old midfielder.

Not only was his father the head coach of the Italian rugby team from 2002-2005, his mother Fiorella hails from the football-mad European nation.
