Chelsea announce the signing of Alvaro Morata
The summer saga surrounding Alvaro Morata appears to have reached its conclusion after Chelsea announced the signing of the Spanish international through their official website.
“The move is now subject to him agreeing personal terms and passing a medical,” read part of the statement.
While no confirmation has been made surrounding the fee, The Daily Telegraph have claimed an initial £58 million has been paid to Real Madrid before any possible add-ons.
That makes Alvaro Morata the club’s new record signing; Fernando Torres’ transfer from Liverpool for £50 million in 2011 stood as Chelsea’s most expensive transfer for the past six years.
Morata’s price tag is also an accurate reflection of the type of money big clubs must spend to acquire the best players in the current market; Premier League rivals Arsenal and Liverpool have already broken their club-record transfers with the purchases of Alexandre Lacazette and Mohamed Salah, respectively.
“I’m very happy. God willing, tomorrow I will be at Chelsea, a club that has always admired me,” said Morata to Spanish newspaper Marca.
Alvaro Morata leaves Real Madrid with a record of 31 goals in 95 appearances across two spells, winning two La Liga titles, two Champions League titles, two Copa del Rey titles and the FIFA Club World Cup.
