Geoffrey Kondogbia's 40-yard own goal: Top 10 own goals of all-time

Geoffrey Kondogbia's 40-yard own goal for Inter Milan against Chelsea was something special. Here are 10 others from history that compare.
10) Gershom Cox, Aston Villa vs. Wolves, 1888
As ever, we should start at the beginning. The first ever recorded own goal in English football history came in 1888, and perhaps as a portent of how magnificently silly this sport was to become, it was for a long time believed to be the first ever goal in the newly formed Football League. Cox, a full-back for Villa, put through his own goal after half an hour of their fixture against local rivals Wolves, only for Tom Green to equalise, and the game finished 1-1. Cox's slightly dubious claim to fame was debunked in 2013, when a researcher helping mark the Football League's 125th anniversary established that Cox scored his goal at around 4 p.m. on Sept. 8, meaning that because of staggered kickoffs Kenny Davenport, a Bolton inside-forward, had in fact recorded the nascent league's first strike, some 13 minutes earlier against Derby County. Still, Cox still holds the "honour" of being the first to cause his teammates to slump in half-disgust, half-sympathy so ... that's something.
9) Gareth Bale, Tottenham vs. Liverpool, 2012
The line between comedy and tragedy, so the old saying goes, is incredibly fine. There are few things more tragic on a football pitch than scoring an own goal, and at the same time there are few things funnier than a player being hit full in the face with the ball, aside from perhaps the referee being hit full in the face with the ball. This incident combined the two, with Gareth Bale proving that even the best and priciest footballers in the world are powerless against the force of slapstick, with Aaron Lennon clearing a Steven Gerrard header off the line and straight into his teammate, from which it careened into the net. Bale would, much like Alan Partridge, have the last laugh, though, as he scored a free kick and set up his partner in base comedy Lennon for another, meaning Tottenham won the game 2-1. But the rest of us will still have this moment.
8) Wayne Hatswell, Forest Green vs. Morecambe, 2000
That comedy/tragedy line was danced with even more vigour by Wayne Hatswell, playing for Forest Green against Morecambe in the 2000-01 FA Cup. As the ball fell to him, he had time, space and most importantly options, with about 99 percent of the pitch and surrounding areas in which to deposit the ball that would not result in a goal against his side, so Hatswell, naturally, wound up, put his head down and hoofed the thing not just into his own net, but right into the top corner. It's a piece of true visual tragedy simply because of the effort he put into the finish, quickly followed by the slumped shoulders of the broken man. This Buster Keaton-esque line in physical comedy was also trod by Bury defender Chris Brass, and while you might not know the name, you'll definitely know his most famous moment, Brass being notable for booting the ball into his own face, from where it travelled into the net, in a game against Darlington in 2006. "I didn't know whether to laugh or cry," Brass said afterwards. "I think I was closer to crying." There was some good news, though -- Bury won 3-2, and side-stepped relegation that season.
7) Santiago Vergini, Southampton vs. Sunderland, 2014
When polls designed to discover the "best ever" of anything are conducted in modern times, there is a natural and perhaps inevitable bias towards the recent. That is perhaps why, in last year's updated version of the "Players That Shook The Kop" survey to find Liverpool's greatest ever player, Steven Gerrard finished above Kenny Dalglish, Fernando Torres came higher than Graeme Souness, and Jamie Carragher was above Alan Hansen. Still, even with this in mind, it's impossible not to rank Vergini up there with the greats, given the pure quality of his strike. People joke when they say "great finish" with own goals like this, but if you showed someone unfamiliar with the two teams just the goal, they would genuinely have no problems believing it was a striker guiding a shot into the corner, rather than a defender temporarily taking leave of his senses. It was a magnificent effort, although Vergini might have thought that the other seven goals his team conceded would cover up his embarrassment. Sorry, Santiago, no such luck.
6) Tommy Hutchison, Tottenham vs. Manchester City, 1981
There have been a fair few own goals in FA Cup finals down the years. The first came way back in 1877, when Lord Arthur Kinnaird, one of the early doyens of the game and veteran of nine finals, scored against his own team while playing in goal for Wanderers against Oxford University, catching a cross but stepping back over his line. This didn't prevent his side winning 2-1 but Kinnaird, obviously embarrassed by his error, sought to rectify matters by having a word with his pals at the FA and telling them that he didn't in fact take the ball into the goal. Obviously, with a gentleman's word being his bond and all that, the top brass chalked the goal off, officially recording the score as 2-0, but some 50 years later, the goal was reinstated, and quite right too. Other fine examples of this noble art include Blackburn's Mick McGrath putting through his own goal against Wolves in 1960, Des Walker deciding the 1991 final with a header to make it Tottenham 2-1 Nottingham Forest and Gary Mabbutt providing the name for a Coventry fanzine by skewing the ball into his own net with his left knee in 1987.
However, it's to another Tottenham final we turn for the definitive cup final own goal, when Manchester City's Tommy Hutchison scored at both ends of the 1981 showpiece. Hutchison opened the scoring with a fine flying header from a Ray Ranson cross, but with 10 minutes remaining Glenn Hoddle lined up a free kick for Spurs, which Hutchison attempted to anticipate the path of (a task which, in fairness, he succeeded in), but only managed to achieve directing the errant shot past his colleague Joe Corrigan. As it happens, Hutchison is one of three players to "achieve" this feat, one being Mabbutt, the other Charlton's Bert Turner, against Derby in 1946, but history has decreed that he is the most famous to split his favours at Wembley.
5) Festus Baise, Sun Hei SC vs. Citizen AA, 2011
Flamboyance, in football as in most walks of life, is always a welcome sight. We all need something to cut through the drudgery, to make light of the darker moments in humanity, of which there are of course plenty. So it is with own goals, which are often simple, honest and straightforward mistakes, but very occasionally provide a moment of the high-kickin', horn-tootin', flag-wavin' spectacular. Tony Popovic is often regarded as the high priest of this sub-genre, and his scorpion kick while playing for Crystal Palace against Portsmouth in 2004 was pretty spectacular, but a slightly more obscure effort by Festus Baise for Sun Hei against Citizen AA in the Hong Kong Premier League tops it in that respect. Sure, Popovic had the necessary elements of style, athleticism and "What on earth is he trying to do?" but Baise had all that and more, including more distance, more loop and an acrobatic flourish, almost doing a full front-flip while directing the ball into his own net.
4) Jamie Pollock, Manchester City vs. QPR, 1998
Right now, a generation of Manchester City fans is growing up not knowing about the City that used to be, about how they would always find new and interesting ways to make a mess of things, how they were "typical City." Of course, on plenty of occasions they weren't just heartbreakers, they were just plain incompetent, and the City of today with Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure bear very little resemblance to the City of the late 1990s, with Lee Bradbury, Tony Vaughan and Jamie Pollock. In the penultimate game of the 1997-98 season, City needed to beat QPR, also in danger of the drop, to keep their chances of survival in the old Division One (now the Championship) in their own hands.
It started well after Georgi Kinkladze gave them the lead, but that's where the good news ended, as Martyn Margetson picked up a backpass and gave Mike Sheron the equaliser, before Pollock stepped up to provide the most "City" moment possible. Pollock collected a QPR forward pass, lobbed it over his own defence as if he were paying tribute to Pele's goal in the 1958 World Cup final, before looping a precision header into the net. The QPR players stood half-delighted, half-baffled, and while Bradbury equalised to make the final score 2-2, the result effectively relegated City, a demotion confirmed on the final day of the season when Portsmouth beat Bradford.
QPR were, of course, rather grateful, and later that year some fans voted Pollock the most influential man of the last 2,000 years. "Jesus came second, apparently," Pollock said. "It was cruel of QPR fans to vote for me because that own goal was the lowest point of my career, but I certainly had a laugh when I heard about the poll."
3) Richard Dunne, various, 2004-14
It was as if Richard Dunne, upon watching Vergini's spectacular effort on Saturday, thought that he simply couldn't let this lie, that own goals were his thing, and could not in all good conscience allow a weekend featuring such a great of the genre pass without making his own contribution. Dunne's own goal against Liverpool on Sunday was the 11th of his career, and the 10th in the Premier League, putting him well clear of the next "best," Jamie Carragher (who retired on seven), and one up from the number of league goals Andriy Shevchenko scored at the right end for Chelsea.
In fairness, given that Dunne has been a top-flight defender for the majority of his 17 years in the game, and often playing for struggling teams, it's not the biggest surprise that he "tops" this chart, but the big man does seem adept at getting himself into some pretty hapless situations. Dunne opened his account in 2004, helping West Brom somehow secure a 1-1 draw at Manchester City while not having a shot on target, and put through his own net again a couple of months later in the Manchester derby, a game in which he could quite easily have been credited with two own goals. In all, Dunne's own goals have cost assorted teams nine points over the years (including a last-minute "winner" while playing for Aston Villa against QPR in 2011), but he has been a fine defender for much of that time, so he's at least even. Probably.
2) Lee Dixon, Arsenal vs. Coventry, 1991
Goalkeepers, they say, like to get an early touch on the ball. To have a feel of the thing, making them part of the game and so it's not a shock to the system when they have to field a shot or cross. This may all be true, but on a sunny September day in 1991, Lee Dixon took this idea to something of an extreme. When a player passes back to his goalie it's usually good form and fairly sensible to perhaps warn the man what you're going to do first, but Dixon clearly felt such niceties were not required. He picked the ball up from a Coventry goal kick gone awry, around 30 yards from his own goal, turned and delicately chipped David Seaman in the Arsenal goal, joining the illustrious ranks of Nayim and Ronaldinho as players who have caught ol' Safe Hands unawares. When George Graham drilled the famous old back four of Dixon, Steve Bould, Tony Adams and Nigel Winterburn, he probably didn't bother to warn them not to do this sort of thing because, well, why would you need to? Dixon contemplated existence, Arsenal lost the game 2-1.
1) Gary Sprake, Liverpool vs. Leeds, 1967
A respected keeper who won the league title with Leeds and 37 caps for Wales, Gary Sprake is nonetheless largely remembered for a series of calamitous handling errors, including one thanks to a Wembley pitch disturbed by the Horse of the Year show in the 1970 FA Cup final, when a bobbling Peter Houseman shot evaded his grasp. Another came three years earlier, in a league match against Liverpool at Anfield, when Sprake collected a back pass from Jack Charlton and began to throw the ball out, only to change his mind halfway through the effort. Over to Eric Stanger of the Yorkshire Post to explain what happened next: "When he carried on with his throw the ball, instead of leaving his gloved palm near the top of the arc, stayed there for one split second and, on being released, it sailed over his left shoulder into the net." Depending on who you believe, either the Kop started singing, or the half-time DJ played over the Tannoy, Des O'Connor's "Careless Hands" in the sort of jape for which football fans are famous. Although that wasn't all bad news for Sprake: he used the song as the title of his autobiography.
"Obviously I wish I hadn't made any mistakes but it is an inevitable part of being a goalkeeper," said Sprake later, of the errors that dogged him. "Once I started the game I would be fine and, although I would be angry at myself and disappointed if I made an error, I can honestly say it never affected my confidence. If I made a mistake, I would put it behind me and get on with the game. I think the games where I made mistakes prove that, such as at Anfield. Even though I scored the own goal, during the second half I played really well."

Neymar set to Sig n€300m contract to become ambassador for 2022 World Cup

Qatar World Cup ambassador
Neymar is going to make a lot of money over the coming weeks. Already extremely wealthy, Mundo Deportivoreports that the Brazilian footballer is set to sign a €300m contract with Qatar Sports Investment in Doha.
He’ll be getting paid €60m a year to promote the 2022 World Cup, a tournament that was secured illegally by Qatar. The Gulf country have also been criticised for essentially enslaving stadium workers by confiscating passports.
Thousands of people have died to help Qatar prepare for this World Cup. But €300m is a tempting offer.
Of course, it’s no coincidence that Qatar Sports Investment also own PSG. Signing this contract will allow Neymar to buy himself out of his contract with Barcelona. It could be a clever way for PSG to get around FFP rules.

Ivan Perisic scores against Chelsea: Manchester United fans urge Red Devils to sign him

IVAN PERISIC scored for Inter Milan in their pre-season friendly against Chelsea – and Manchester United fans are desperate to sign him.

Perisic has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United this summer.

Jose Mourinho is keen to add a winger to his squad and Perisic is said to be his top target.

However, Inter Milan boss Luciano Spalletti claims United's pursuit for the 28-year-old is “over” after the club failed to follow up their interest and meet his £48million asking price.

Despite the uncertainty over his future, Perisic has continued to play a part in Inter's pre-season, and scored for the Serie A side during their friendly against Chelsea today.

And the Old Trafford faithful were quick to take to Twitter to urge Manchester United to sign the winger.

Gareth Bale 'could could to Manchester United

The possibility of Manchester United signing Gareth Bale is no longer seen as impossible.

Jose Mourinho has become more encouraged Real Madrid will open negotiations over the Wales star - just days after saying an approach as pointless report the Manchester Evening News.

However, these are still early days and Ed Woodward is used to this type of situation.

United’s executive vice chairman placed the winger on his list of dream signings almost as soon as he took over control transfer business from David Gill.

Bale, however, has always shown a reluctance to move to Old Trafford - even after United outbid Real for him in 2013.

And that remains the major obstacle to a deal this summer.

Bale is happy at the Bernabeu.

He is under contract - and despite his future being the subject of uncertainty on numerous occasions over the last four years, he has steadfastly refused to walk away - winning three Champions League crowns in that time.

There are no clear indications yet that his resolve has softened - confirming in the past week here in the US that he is happy with the Spanish giants.

Mourinho’s own indiscretion when whispering to him in the tunnel in Santa Clara was evidence of his desire to make Bale the world class winger he’s desperate to recruit this summer.

“I can’t buy you because you don’t talk to me,” he is believed to have said when his conversation was picked up by television cameras.

But there is a growing belief this will be summer when Bale comes closest to exiting Real.

Manchester City ’s hierarchy have picked up on it - believing Real will look to do business with United in order to help fund their own pursuit of Kylian Mbappe.

Even Zinedine Zidane failed to rule out the possibility when questioned on the subject in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

“I hope the BBC (Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo ) stay for this season” said the Real manager. “I hope everyone remains. I want everyone who is here to stay, but anything can happen right up until August 31.”

Real president Florentino Perez instead accepted the £70m on offer from Chelsea .

Should United present a firm bid in the region of the £85.3m Real paid Tottenham for Bale, it could be enough convince Perez to deal.

The concern for Woodward and Mourinho is that they allow themselves to become embroiled in a pointless pursuit, with the season rapidly approaching and United still only halfway through their intended business.

They have already invested a lot of time in Ivan Perisic, with negotiations currently at a stalemate.

They wisely refused to be drawn in by Ronaldo’s flirtations with a return to Old Trafford at the start of the summer - instead pressing ahead with their interest in Romelu Lukaku , who Mourinho identified as his priority.

The determining factor is Bale’s stance.

Should - as expected - Mbappe head to the Bernabeu, where would that leave him?

He is already facing up to Isco usurping him in Real’s attack, while Ronaldo remains immovable.

Benzema has also proved himself critical to Zidane’s system, which has delivered back-to-back Champions Leagues and the title in two years.

Real’s own fans even voted to sell Bale in a poll run by Spanish daily newspaper AS this week

The arrival of Mbappe would only weaken his position further.

Now could well be the time for him to move with nothing left to prove after a fabulously successful four years in Spain.

That is United’s hope - hope that has increased rapidly in recent days.

Arsenal boss on £300m Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and massive transfer fees

The Arsenal manager also believes Neymar could becomes the first £300million player.
Arsenal have so far signed just two players this summer, with Sead Kolasinac costing them nothing.
Alexandre Lacazette’s arrival from Marseille broke the Gunners’ transfer record.
But while Wenger confirmed his club will continue to look at deals this summer, he remains frustrated with the current valuations of average players.
"What’s next is to remain active," he said on Arsenal’s website. "Not a lot [has] happened.
"I believe there are actually two ways to improve the team. First of all to improve the quality of what we do in training to improve the squad and improve the players we have, and secondly to bring more top-level players in.
"The difficulty is to bring top-level players in because you pay a huge amount of money for very normal players at the moment. As well, all the big clubs are chasing the same players and that provokes huge inflation. Maybe this will be the first time we [football clubs] pay over £200m, maybe over £300m with Neymar and around £200m with Mbappe.
"So there is a huge inflation. But we are active, we are working hard and I think we have done well with Kolasinac, we have done well with Lacazette and we are continuing to work.”
Wenger was in for Mbappe earlier this summer but Monaco rejected their £87m bid for the player.
As for Neymar, Maris Saint-Germain want to sign the Barcelona striker and are eyeing his £196m release clause.
Arsenal are in action today against Benfica in the Emirates Cup.
They face Chelsea next week in the Community Shield at Wembley before their Premier League season kicks off with a home clash against Leicester.

Devonte Redmond joins The Iron on Loan from Manchester United

The Iron have signed Manchester United midfielder Devonte Redmond on loan until January.
The 20-year-old becomes Scunthorpe’s fifth addition of the summer and first loan recruit with the start of the Sky Bet League One campaign just a week away.
Redmond, born in Manchester, aided the reserve side to retain their league title in 2016, three years after netting his first goal for the under-18’s against Aston Villa.
In 2013-14, he ended the campaign with four goals in 19 starts, with four further appearances as a substitute. He then played 29 times during the following season, scoring once in a 5-2 win over Manchester City.
Graduating as a scholar to the under-21’s, Redmond then made 21 appearances (including 15 starts) in 2015-16. He also notched four goals in the 26 games he played last term.
Redmond will wear the number 18 jersey and will be in contention for some minutes in the final pre-season encounter at Luton Town.

Chelsea Now after Renato Sanches

Chelsea have joined the race for Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches. The Blues have submitted and enquiry for the Portuguese international, who continues to be linked with the likes of Manchester United and AC Milan as well.
Renato Sanches has failed to establish himself at Bayern Munich after his Euro 2016 performances earned him a move to the Bavarians. The Allianz Arena, though, has not exactly been a stomping ground for the youngster as he failed to lock down a regular place in the starting eleven under Carlo Ancelotti.

The 19-year-old played just 17 Bundesliga matches last season and failed to open his account for the Bavarians – a shocking return of 0 goals and 0 assists. And while the return is not the matter of concern – Renato Sanches is more a holding midfielder and an enabler in the midfielder, the numbers do not justify the youngster’s talent.
Going into the season, Bayern have reinforced the midfield with the addition of Corentin Tolisso, who is sure to push Sanches further down the pecking order. There have been reports of the Portuguese being allowed to leave on loan while clubs like AC Milan and Manchester United continue to pursue a permanent deal for the youngster.
AC Milan have been touted as the favourites to land the player in a permanent deal worth around £35 million, despite reports of Bayern allowing the player to leave only in a loan deal. However, Manchester United, who were interested in the player before his move to Germany has also remained interested throughout the summer.
The Red Devils are looking for a midfielder to add to the squad and while Nemanja Matic has been linked heavily with the club, Chelsea’s resistance towards letting the Serb go to Manchester may force them to give up their pursuit of Matic.
Renato Sanches has age on his side and is said to be available for a fee less than Matic. However, Chelsea have themselves jumped into the race for the Portuguese. Antonio Conte has submitted an enquiry for Sanches as the Italian continues to scour for additions in midfield.
The Italian connection between Conte and Ancelotti might just give Conte the edge and the Chelsea manager might move ahead of AC Milan and Manchester United in pursuit of the Portuguese. For now, though, Chelsea’s entry will also encourage Manchester United in their pursuit of Matic, who may now be more accessible than before

where will Diego Costa play next season??

A C MILAN
Milan are in the market for a centre forward and have held talks with Costa’s agent, but have yet to approach the player or indeed Chelsea to table an offer or discuss the fee, with Chelsea apparently valuing the player around £55 million. Milan appear to be the front runners in the market, but there still seems a good ways to go, as whilst they have been linked with Costa in the past, he hasn’t truly expressed any desire to go to Italy.
ATLETICO MADRID
A return to his former club is the preferred destination of Costa, but the stumbling block here is that he would be prevented from appearing for Atletico until January, as the club are under an embargo which restricts them from registering a player during this transfer window. Atletico have made a £26 million offer for Costa, but that has fallen well short of the Blues valuation. However, we feel this remains the most likely destination for Costa, who is prepared to sit out half a season to secure his dream move back to the Vicente Calderon.
TIANJIN QUANJIAN – or another Chinese Side
Chelsea’s likely preferred option for Costa would be to send him to China, and one of the moneybags teams in their Super League division. Although a few clubs are currently under financial pressure, the ‘overspend’ culture still remains high in China, with clubs desperate to bring in famous names to help promote their League. Tianjin Quanjian had already made a huge bid for Costa last season, which was rejected – but Chelsea would expect to command a fee higher from China than any European team interested in Costa, and also know that he could not come back to potentially haunt them in any Champions League matchup. Costa would not want to go to China, but if all else fails, he may have no other option.
EVERTON
After selling Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, Everton were widely expected to replace him with Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud, who himself was expected to leave after the arrival of Alexandre Lacazette. But Giroud now seems quite content to fight for his place at the Emirates, leaving with Everton with no direct replacement for Lukaku. Wayne Rooney has returned, but is preferred in a deeper role. So could Costa be the man Everton now turn to? It is a distinct possibility, although as yet they have not indicated anything in that direction. Funds are not an issue, and continued delays with the signing of Gylfi Sigurddson, means that Everton could shelf plans with him, especially if Ross Barkley stays, and make a play for Costa – whom Everton fans would love, being right out of the Duncan Ferguson mould.
CHELSEA
Despite Chelsea boss Antonio Conte having confirmed that Costa is on his way out and having now signed Alvaro Morata, this is football, and we all know that anything can happen in the beautiful game – and often does. Chelsea may not get an acceptable offer and should Morata get injured, or Conte have a sudden change of heart, then Costa may just stay at the London club for a further season. Highly unlikely….but you just never know
It seems that the destination for Costa will end up being one of the above options. Despite a reputation that precedes him, Costa has always scored goals and been a threat to opposing defences. Exactly why there is such little interest in such an effective player, with cash being thrown at arguably lesser players all over Europe, is quite extraordinary. But that’s the beauty of the game…..isn’t it?

Neymar fights with Barcelona teammate before storming off

Neymar is said to have left a Barcelona training in anger as his departure from the La Liga giants appears to be happening.
The Daily Mail reported that the Brazil superstar had stormed off the pitch after a fight with Barcelona’s new signing Nelson Semedo during a training session in Miami, where Barca were having their pre-season tour.
Neymar has been reported to make a likely RM1 billion world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, and his walkout looks to have made that move more likely to happen.
Neymar and right back Semedo were reported to have charged into each other in a challenge for the ball, with the former later confronting the ex-Benfica player.
Javier Mascherano intervened and Semedo moved away but Neymar was unhappy, shouting and gesturing to the player, and he had to be stopped by Sergio Busquets.
Neymar then furiously tore off his training bib and threw it to the ground
Neymar later angrily hit a ball off the crossbar before booting
another one away before storming off.

Arsenal host Emirates Cup

Alexandre Lacazette will make his first appearance in front of Arsenal’s home crowd this weekend as the Gunners step up their pre-season preparations in the Emirates Cup.
Arsene Wenger splashed out a club record £52 million ($68 million, 58 million euros) to sign Lacazette from Lyon this month and the France striker is expected to get his first taste of the Emirates Stadium when Arsenal face Benfica on Saturday.
With Arsenal’s Premier League campaign getting underway against Leicester on August 11 after next week’s Community Shield clash with Chelsea, Lacazette has an opportunity to make a good initial impression on the Gunners faithful in the four-team friendly tournament.
Aside from a desire to justify Wenger’s hefty investment, Lacazette’s Emirates debut will carry extra significance for the 26-year-old, who grew up admiring Arsenal’s legendary ‘Invincibles’.
Emulating that 2003-04 Arsenal team, who won the title without a single defeat thanks to inspired contributions from French stars Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires, might be aiming a little too high, but Lacazette is confident he can make a big impact in his debut season.
“Arsenal is a legendary club. Throughout my childhood, thanks to Thierry Henry and other French players, I always dreamed of playing for this club,” Lacazette said.
“Arsenal’s past appeals to me. I like clubs with a history. Also, the fact that the manager has been here for a while shows that it is a stable club which I like.
“In my opinion, Arsenal is also the club that plays the best football in England so I really wanted to come here.”
Lacazette’s arrival has given fresh hope to Arsenal supporters hoping their team can build on an unexpectedly upbeat end to a traumatic season.
For months it seemed Wenger was on the brink of calling time on his 21-year reign as Arsenal suffered one humiliating setback after another.
Yet, despite Arsenal’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and repeated fan protests against Wenger, the 67-year-old was last seen on English soil cavorting jubilantly around Wembley after his side’s surprise FA Cup final victory against Premier League champions Chelsea.
Days later, Wenger ended the speculation over his future by signing a new contract, but the Frenchman knows patience is still in short supply among supporters who haven’t seen their club win the title for 13 years.
Having finished 18 points behind Chelsea, Wenger is betting Lacazette can help close the gap by replicating his form at Lyon, where he had the best shot-conversion rate of any forward who scored 20-plus goals in Europe’s leading five divisions last term.
Lacazette took just 15 minutes to bag his first Arsenal goal in a friendly against Sydney FC in Australia two weeks ago, but he failed to net in any of the next three matches, including a lacklustre 3-0 defeat against Chelsea.
Although Alexis Sanchez is not scheduled to return to training until next week following his Confederations Cup duty with Chile, Wenger is sure to face questions about the Arsenal forward, who has only one year left on his contract amid talk he is trying to engineer a move to Paris Saint Germain or Manchester City.
Spanish side Sevilla and German outfit Leipzig, featuring Liverpool target Naby Keita, face off in Saturday’s other fixture at the Emirates.

Leipzig v Sevilla (1300 GMT)
Arsenal v Benfica (1520 GMT)

Kiwi footballer Niko Kirwan signs first professional deal with Italian third division side

kiwi footballer Niko Kirwan has followed in his famous father's footsteps by signing a professional deal in Italy.

Team Wellington confirmed on Friday that the younger Kirwan, the son of former All Blacks winger and Blues coach Sir John Kirwan, had penned his first professional contract with AC Mestre

The club play Lega Pro, which is the third division of the Italian football system, after earning promotion from the fourth-tier last season.

In more ways than one, the move has a certain symmetry for the 21-year-old midfielder.

Not only was his father the head coach of the Italian rugby team from 2002-2005, his mother Fiorella hails from the football-mad European nation.

Cristiano Reveals why he want more children

The Real Madrid footballer already has three children and is currently awaiting the birth of his fourth child.
Now the 32-year-old has admitted his eldest son Cristiano Jr aged seven, wants more siblings to bring the tally up to the same number as his football shirt.
He is said to have made the confession during a Chinese TV interview picked up by papers in Portugal.
A Portuguese newspaper entitled Correio da Manha quoted Cristiano as saying: “Cristianinho is very happy.
“He’s doing well and says he wants more brothers and sisters. He wants seven, the magic number, and I think that’s good.”
He also added that he was "enjoying the moment" with his expanding family.
Cristiano recently welcomed newborn twins Eva and Mateo via a surrogate mother last month.
And earlier this month, the Portuguese star confirmed his girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez is pregnant following months of speculation.

The 23-year-old recently fuelled rumours that she was expecting after she was spotted with a small bump.

The couple began dating last year and Georgina appears to be spending a lot of time bonding with Cristiano's children as she recently cuddled up to the star in a cute Instagram snap as he cradled one of the newborns.

Radja Nainggolan igns new deal with Roma

The 29-year-old Belgium international had been linked with Manchester United in Italian media, while Chelsea were also reported to be interested.
"I think I have demonstrated that this is what I always wanted," Nainggolan said.
"I'm very happy that the club and I can continue our adventure and move forward together."
Nainggolan has played 161 times for Roma since joining from Cagliari in 2014.
He has scored 27 goals for the Italian club, 14 of which came last season as Roma finished second in the league, four points behind Juventus.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the money again as Swedish striker is immortalised on 1,000 kroner note

It is barely overstating the matter to say Zlatan Ibrahimovic has attained living legend status in Sweden - he is the country's top scorer and is being immortalised in a statue outside the national stadium.
Now, the striker has his face on currency after being represented on the 1,000 kroner note by a Swedish artist.
The former Manchester United, Barcelona and Juventus striker seemed impressed with the piece, made by photographer Bingo Rimer.

Ibrahimovic posed with a blown up version of the note on Instagram, captioned 'You have Benjamin Franklin and you have me' referring to the statesman whose likeness adorns the $100 note in the US.
Unfortunately for his fans, the note is not official Swedish currency and is not available - meaning you cannot make a payment with a wad of Zlatans.
It is unlike the official stamps released by Sweden in 2014, with five special edition pieces released of the forward in the yellow of the national team.

However the famously self-confident forward will be pleased with Rimer's choice of note, with 1,000 kroner - roughly equivalent to £93 - the largest denomination available in Swedish currency.
Rimer posted further pictures of his art to social media, including a large canvas of the note, featuring a head shot of Zlatan with a smaller version of the player celebrating a goal.
The striker is currently without a club, after suffering a serious knee injury towards the end of a successful season with United.

Manchester United set to miss out on Renato Sanches as Bayern Munich midfielder 'agrees four-year deal to join AC Milan' for £35m

  • Renato Sanches has been linked with a move to Manchester United
  • Jose Mourinho has confirmed he is in the marker for a midfielder this summer
  • However the 19-year-old now looks set to join AC Milan in a £35million transfer

  • Manchester United look set to miss out on Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches.
The Portuguese ace has been linked with a move to Old Trafford to hook up with compatriot Jose Mourinho, who confirmed yesterday that he was in the market for a midfielder.
He was heralded as a future star after his performances at Euro 2016 and Bayern snapped him up for £27.5million - however he has failed to make an impact in Germany and is free to leave.

he won't be heading to Manchester; instead the 19-year-old is set to join Italian giants AC Milan.
They say he will sign a four-year contract at the San Siro for around £35million as Milan continue their huge summer of spending.
Sanches admitted recently that he was seeking an exit from Bayern and that he was open to joining Milan.

'AC Milan is an interesting option,' he said. 'If the opportunity arises and the clubs can agree, I would like to see them.
'I am now on the China tour with FC Bayern, but after that we will get together in Munich and hopefully find a solution.'
Mourinho has spoken previously of his attempts to sign Sanches, but failed to seal a deal because of his late arrival in Manchester last year.
'I signed in May, we started talking a week before, but completely out of the process.
'If I had arrived earlier, I'd fight for him.
'Manchester United watched Renato many times and maybe I did it even more.'
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with both Nemanja Matic and Eric Dier, along with Sanches, as potential solutions to their midfield problems.

Real Madrid Set To sign Kylian Mbappe for £161m

Kylian Mbappe covered his bedroom walls in pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo as a 14-year-old... now he's set to become his Real Madrid team-mate
Real Madrid have reportedly agreed a £160million move for Kylian Mbappe
The Frenchman idolised Cristiano Ronaldo during his childhood
Pictures of Mbappe as a 14-year-old show the extent of his love for Ronaldo
As a 14-year-old, Kylian Mbappe plastered his bedroom walls with images of Cristiano Ronaldo.
As of next season, the French wonderkid could well be sharing a changing room with his idol.
Mbappe, the subject of a huge approach from Real Madrid, is poised to swap Monaco for the Spanish capital this summer.
Soon, the Monaco youngster could be playing in the same team as his idol Ronaldo
And the switch would complete the remarkable journey from fan to team-mate in four short years.
Mbappe's love for Real, and particularly Ronaldo, is made evident by pictures taken of him at his home in the Parisian suburb of Bondy, aged 14.
The beaming youngster poses for the camera in front of around two-dozen photographs of the Portuguese in action for Madrid.
Mbappe's father Wilfried has previously spoken of his son's admiration for Ronaldo.
'He is a Real Madrid fan and his idol is Cristiano Ronaldo,' he told France Football last year.
'He used to spend hours watching videos [of Ronaldo] on the internet.'
Soon, he may well get to see the football icon up close and personal.
The teenager's rise since those pictures were taken is quite extraordinary. After just 58 first-team appearances, he has been slapped with a price tag of £160million - double the fee Madrid paid Manchester United for his hero Ronaldo in 2009.

Mbappe became Monaco's youngest-ever first-team player at the age of 16 years, 347 days in 2015 and then the club's youngest goalscorer aged 17 years and 62 days.
He made his France debut against Luxembourg in March and is now set to become the most expensive footballer in history, with Manchester City rivaling Real for his signature.
